What Happened With The AT&T Data Breach?
This entire thing went viral, and mainly in the mainstream media back in March 2024, and that was only about a big dataset being leaked onto the internet, and sure enough, that was linked to AT&T customers.
And just to let you know about the sheer scale of the data leak we’re talking about here, well, as per the reports, it is believed that there was almost 7.6 million current customers’ data was leaked and made available on the internet. But there was more to it, actually, like some records also suggest that about 65.4 million former customers were also disclosed, so if you do a little math here, we’re in actuality talking about more than 70 million individuals’ data being leaked here.
Was There Another Data Breach?
Indeed, it even left things more messy.
Officially, though, on from the side of AT&T, there was another such case, and they agreed it back in 2024 only. As per the details, well, the data, in this case, was kept in a workspace of a third-party cloud platform, which AT&T was using. And sure enough, it was this data that the hackers managed to get access to and that’s what followed.
And it is not just names or addresses we’re talking about here, nah, instead, and quite shockingly though, the breach disclosed call and message records from May 2022 to October 2022, with a minor portion of records from January 2023 being exposed.
An essential fact is that the real content of calls or text messages was not revealed, which surely may sound like a relief, but no, that’s still not a good situation to be in.
Why Did Customers File Lawsuits?
And when things were already out of hand, no doubt, the customers raised questions on the company itself for not really taking enough measures to secure the data of their customers, and they failed at it very miserably. That’s what this entire case was all about.
And by 2024 alone, we saw so many legal actions started by groups of customers, and sure enough, when a bunch of these lawsuits piled up really fast, no doubt, they were then merged into one and called a class action legal fight.
Did AT&T Agree To A Settlement?
Yeah. Pretty much!
And just in a matter of nearly one year or so, AT&T went on to settle this lawsuit for about $177 million because it was damaging their reputation too much, even though they were the ones at fault. And because it was being talked about a lot in the mainstream media, they had to do something about it. And that surely was a smart move by the company because such cases can pretty much drag on for years to come and bring down the financial condition of both parties because of the higher costs involved. So for now, it seems like both parties are at an agreement.
