What Is Ozempic and Why’s It Getting So Much Attention?

Ozempic is a drug designed by Novo Nordisk. At first, it was aimed at patients with type 2 diabetes to make their blood glucose levels easier to manage. Nevertheless, individuals noticed that the medicine had the side effect of fat loss. Besides, the word spread rapidly (celebrities, social media personalities, fans of all kinds), and everyone wanted a piece of it.

What do you think is the main point? Ozempic gives you the sensation of having a full stomach. Very full. Hence, people began to use it only for the purpose of weight loss, although it was not made for that. And thus the problems began to emerge.

So, What’s the Problem?

This is the point where the situation really gets serious. Individuals who have taken Ozempic have mentioned a number of heavy side effects. The foremost one? Gastroparesis, by the way, is stomach paralysis. In other words, the stomach becomes sluggish and inefficient in the digestion of food. The symptoms that usually follow are continuous nausea, excessive stomach distension, and vomiting. Surely, this is not enjoyable.

But this is not the end of it. Some individuals have even experienced an abrupt loss of sight. There is a rare disease known as NAION that inhibits the blood flow to the eye, and a small number of patients claim that they became blind in only one eye, and this only happened within a day. Besides that, there is a list of other side effects, such as trouble with the gallbladder, inflammation of the pancreas, and obstruction of the intestines.

Most of these risks? They were not even close to being clearly or explicitly indicated in the warning label. It is the reason why people are taking legal action against the manufacturers; they think that they have not been given sufficient warnings.

When Did the Lawsuits Begin?

In August 2023, the first case was brought against Novo Nordisk. Jaclyn Bjorklund alleged that after she used Ozempic that she suffered from stomach paralysis and lost her sight.

By August 2025, more than 2,190 similar lawsuits will have been filed in the U.S. The MDL (Multidistrict Litigation) that has been established in Pennsylvania is a special court process that allows these lawsuits to be managed as one group. There are various new cases in the mentioned states, such as Texas and New Jersey.

Why Are People Suing Novo Nordisk?

Here’s the short version:

  • Several patients are saying that the company didn’t provide proper warnings about significant risks such as gastroparesis or loss of eyesight.
  • Some of them were persuaded by the hype on different platforms and the advertisements that Ozempic was a safe way to lose weight.
  • They continue to face high healthcare costs, disruption of their usual activities, and persistent health issues.

However, Novo Nordisk states that they definitely alerted the users that some stomach problems could occur, just that they did not proclaim the medicine to be entirely safe. Well, that is the point where the dispute between the two sides’ lawyers starts.
